About

We listen, act, and transform

I am a licensed psychologist providing culturally sensitive and attachment-focused psychodynamic, DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) and neuroscience-informed psychoanalytic therapy to adults, adolescents, and couples in a private practice setting. I have experience in university, research team, medical center and community mental health settings. I specialize in working with the complex and severe conditions of young adulthood, but I enjoy and am able to work with a broad range of individuals and families aged 16 and up. I have a special interest and competence in working with stigmatized conditions - issues in which the client suffers from the real or internalized perception of a condition as much or more than the actual symptoms themselves. Stigmatized conditions include but are not limited to: addiction to substances or processes, severe parenting issues, psychosis, sexual trauma or sex-related issues, rule-breaking behavior, etc. Prior to private practice, I was a psychologist at UC Berkeley working directly with students and providing crisis, urgent, and routine services. Prior to my time at UCB, I was a staff psychologist at UCSF-Langley Porter working on a research team dedicated to the study of young adults at risk for developing psychosis. Prior to that, I worked in Alameda county providing in-home care to families with young adults recently diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Prior to that work, I completed my predoctoral internship at Stanford University Counseling and Psychological Services and postdoctoral training at Kaiser San Rafael Chemical Dependency Services (Addiction Medicine). Prior to that I completed my dissertation on First Generation College Students and Survivor Guilt, four years of study and four years of supervised practicum training at the following sites: Saint Mary's College Counseling Center in Moraga, CA; Oakes Children's Center in SF; The Wright Institute Clinic in Berkeley, CA; and Stand! For Families Free of Violence court mandated perpetrators program in Concord, CA. I am a passionate advocate for people addressing mental health issues. I work with forward-thinking, community-oriented agencies and educational institutions that strive to raise the standard of mental health treatment. My current interests include the treatment of trauma with modalities informed by neuroscience and nervous system regulation. Please see my Linked In profile for more specific information about my training https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifer-rooney-psy-d-4696654 (also listed further down under "Social Media"). After seven years of accepting all forms of insurance, I no longer accept insurance. However, I can provide you with a superbill and resources to receive out-of-network reimbursement through your insurance provider if your insurance provider provides that option. The majority of my clients receive some percentage of reimbursement for the services they receive in my practice. I can be contacted at dr.jennifer.rooney@gmail.com
